On Politics
I am a dual citizen of Canada and The United States of America. Both countries are fundamentally different and great in their own ways, both nations have a rich history of helping each other, even when the United States was not a super power. Americans who put down Canadians, and Canadians who put down Americans do not know the history of the two nations, and how much we both rely on each other.
The power of a government of the people, for the people, by the people, is (get this) the people. The greatest tragedy is that people rally behind messages of hope and faith, and do not research and do not make their judgments on sound facts or even a personal political ideology, they listen to the most attractive candidate, or the one who will promise them the most.
On the compass I am about as far libertarian as you can go, without reaching Anarchy. I do not support the US Libertarian Party, because I feel that they have fallen to the idea that they are the conservatives big brother. While yes, libertarianism is what the United States was built on the ideology should (and is) a progressive ideology.
People always seem to ignore the radical things that people have done on their own side, and throw a fit every time a group rallies in opposition. Dissent is not anti-American or anti-Canadian, it is what America was founded on — Decent is patriotic.
I do not believe activist groups are “Domestic Terrorists” and that Homeland Security / Royal Canadian Mounted Police has attempted to marginalize people who do not fit with the standard cultural norm, by outcasting them and labeling them as “terrorists” that way the general public will follow like sheep, and turn away from opposing viewpoints.
The best way to combat “bad” speech is to use more “good” speech, law has been successfully being passed and confirmed to take away our rights to our freedoms. I do not believe a person has a right to stand up in a theater and yell “FIRE”, however, a person who wants to walk down the street holding a sign that says “white people suck” should be embraced for using their first amendment right, and then the people who disagree should organize their own speech to counter it. This responsibility falls to the people, not the government.
The government has no place enforcing any laws on the Internet, I accept the Internet as a sovereign entity acting outside the realm of any nation. A nations job is to enforce the laws within their jurisdiction, and if there is something illegal taking place, they should use the real world technologies that they have been using to track down, and stop the person from breaking said laws. IE they cannot and should not make a law that prohibits me from posting pictures of fat people onto the internet, thats free speech, and not their jurisdiction. However, they should (in this scenario) just outlaw taking pictures of fat people and enforcing that.
I support the homosexual lifestyle, and would encourage a vote for gay marriage, however do not feel as so passionately about it to become an activist over it. People have been gay since the beginning of recorded history… if they want the right to marry they should be able to.
